At its nine edition, the Urban Trekking National Day aims at promoting guided walking tours in lesser-known areas of the historical city centres, according to a mode of sustainable tourism, at a low environmental impact and respectful of the land.
The initiative, organized and coordinated at national level by Comune di Siena, this year has the theme "Ordinary stories of not common men and women". Each town has its characters, real or legendary, who can also be not found in books of history but who have made a significant contribution to the life of community.
Roma Capitale in collaboration with AMA Cimiteri Capitolini suggests as trekking route “Faces and Memories of Rome. A walk through the memories at the Monumental Cemetery of Verano”.

Faces and memories of Rome
A walk through the memories at the Monumental Cemetery of Verano.
The historic cemeteries collect the stories of communities. A single composite narrative plot line entwins collective and individual memories, historical events and personal stories. The Monumental Cemetery of Verano traces two centuries of history of Rome through the stories of characters that have marked it by political action, the defense of civic consciousness, the poetic and artistic streak, the search for traces of a unique and unrepeatable historical past. In an evocative environmental and landscape ledge, the route leads through the protagonists of the Risorgimento and leads up to present days; archaeologists who rebuilt, through excavations, the face of ancient Rome; architects who molded Rome capital after the unification of Italy, "er core de Roma" who lives in the words and works of great poets and artists such as Trilussa Petrolini, Fabrizi, Sordi, Rossellini.
